IQ2US: Obama’s Foreign Policy Is a Failure

For many, Obama’s presidency will be defined by its accomplishments.  Taking out Osama bin Laden, disengaging from fights in the Middle East that America cannot win, defusing the threat of a nuclear Iran, and refocusing our attention and resources to Asia, where our greatest opportunities and biggest long-term challenges are located.  But for others, it has been marked by missteps and retreat—pulling back where action and leadership was needed, and presiding over policies that strengthened our adversaries and disheartened our friends.   Has Obama’s foreign policy been a success?

IQ2US: Call a Convention to Amend the Constitution

Almost everyone can think of something they would like to change in the U.S. Constitution.  Some would like to update it to fit new technologies and evolving social mores.  Others think the Supreme Court has illegitimately “updated” it too much already, and would like to restore its original meaning.  Either way, it is always tempting to invoke Article V to amend the Constitution — to “fix" it, or “restore" it, or “improve" it.  But, on the other hand, there is a substantial risk to tinkering with the Constitution:  many amendments seem to have unintended consequences.  And calling a convention for proposing amendments is even riskier, because it has never been done before — and it might inadvertently put the entire constitutional structure up for grabs.  Is it worth the risk?  Should the states call a convention to amend the Constitution?

IQ2US: Gerrymandering Is Destroying the Political Center

It is alleged that the practice of gerrymandering —dividing election districts into units to favor a particular group— subverts democracy by making congressional districts “safe” for one party or the other.  As a result, only those voting in primaries are in effect choosing our representatives.   Are primary voters more extreme in their views, and therefore pulling democrats to the left and republicans to the right?  Or is the impact of gerrymandering actually overblown, while other more divisive contributing factors like the emergence of ideologically charged TV and radio outlets, the role of the internet and social network “echo chambers,” and campaign finance practices are in fact the real drivers of increasing partisanship?  If gerrymandering is a major problem, is there policy or constitutional principles that might be part of the solution?

IQ2US: Give Undocumented Immigrants a Path to Citizenship

There are an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States, and the question of what to do with them has sparked years of fierce debate, but no significant action.  In 2013, the bipartisan “Gang of Eight” managed to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the Senate, only to get it dropped by the House.  And in 2016, a deadlocked Supreme Court decision stalled President Obama’s executive actions, DACA and DAPA, which would have saved 5 million from deportation.  For voters, on this issue, the choice between presidential candidates could not be clearer.  Should we give these immigrants a chance to earn citizenship through a process that would include paying a penalty, passing a security check, and getting in the back of the line? Or are we rewarding them for breaking the rules, and encouraging more of the same?  Do they make positive contributions to the economy and complement our workforce, or do they burden taxpayers and create unwanted competition for jobs?  Should we give undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship?

IQ2US: Blame Big Pharma for Out-of-Control Health Care Costs

Health care costs in the U.S. are some 18 percent of GNP, nearly double what other rich countries spend. We read of drug therapies that cost $100,000 a year or more, and of drug price increases that are 6 times the rate of inflation, on average, and often much more when mergers reduce competition in the industry. Is this a major driver of excessive health care costs? Or is it a by-product of the huge costs of getting new drugs approved? Has big pharma delivered drugs that reduce the need for costly surgeries, which extend life and improve its quality? Or do they deserve the blame that has been leveled against them?

IQ2US: Blame the Elites for the Trump Phenomenon

The elites of both parties have expressed contempt for Donald Trump, and Trump has succeeded in part by channeling his voters’ contempt for the elites.  Does support for Trump reflect an uninformed populism and misplaced anger by a large swath of the American electorate?   Or have the elites failed to empathize with their struggles, and failed to craft effective policies to help them cope?

IQ2US: Climate Change: The EPA Has Gone Overboard

Reducing carbon emissions is clearly good for the environment but often imposes substantial costs.  The costs are most obvious when coal companies go bankrupt, but can affect everyone indirectly through higher energy costs, slower economic growth, reduced employment, and lower business profits.   Has the Environmental Protection Agency considered the costs and benefits of its regulatory mandates fairly and appropriately? Is its Clean Power Plan a bold initiative to reduce carbon pollution at power plants, or an unconstitutional usurpation of power?

TtB: Favorite Game of Thrones fan theories

Welcome back to another edition of Take the BlackWinter is Coming’s official Game of Thrones podcastThis week, after touching on the news that GoT composer Ramin Djawadi will be headlining a 28-city live concert tour, we discuss our favorite favorite Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire fan theories.
Each member of Take the Black—including WiCnet’s Editor in Chief, Dan Selcke—chose a Game of Thrones fan theory, either from the show or the books, and explained the details behind it. We did not cover theories that have already been disproved on the show, or theories that have been borne out, like R+L=J. Here’s a few of the things we have in store for you:
  • Are Brienne and Hodor related to each other?
  • Do ice dragons exist in this universe, and if so, might there be one closer than we think?
  • At what point do Bran’s powers to see into/alter the past become indistinguishable from time travel, and what crazy things might he do with them? More importantly, what crazy things might he already have done?
  • Is there more to the Mad King’s downfall than meets the eye?
  • Is Varys a merman? No, really, is he? I’m not insane. You’re insane.
And this and sekret Targaryens, too! Also: does D+D=T? (Listen to find out more about that one, and possibly laugh uncontrollably.)
As usual, Take the Black leans on the NSFW side (beware F-bombs). Because we discuss book theories, there are some minor spoilers for A Song of Ice and Fire, and even though the Lady Isis and Lord Thone are not book-readers, they did their homework for this particular project, so beware the spoilers.
On a serious note: Lady Isis suffered a tragic loss in her family last week, and we here at WiCnet and Take the Black wish to extend our deepest condolences. The loss of a loved one is never easy, but like the trooper she is, Isis was on this week’s podcast, surrounded by her friends and making us laugh. We love you, Isis.

TtBP: Game of Thrones Season 6 Review, Part 1

Welcome back to another fun and fantastic week of Take the BlackWinter is Coming’s official Game of Thrones podcastThis week we begin to pick apart everything we loved and hated about Game of Thrones Season 6. We start our journey with Episode 601, “The Red Woman,” and two hours later, we end on Episode 605, “The Door.”
This week’s topics include:
  • How Isis wants to start a petition to call Jon “Sexy Jesus” since he’s the one that rose from the dead.
  • We ask the question: Why reveal that Melisandre was so old when it’s never mentioned again during the season?
  • Oh, and speaking of Red Priestess, what the f**k happened to Kinvara?
  • We discuss our mutual appreciation for the continuity in Game of Thrones (e.g. Thoros of Myr’s ability to bring Beric Dondarrion back to life after giving up on his religion, compared to the same crisis of faith Melisandre went through right before she brought back Jon).
  • Why wasn’t the viewing audience allowed to see the reaction on Sansa’s face when Jon tells her of his death and rebirth? Or Jon’s face when Sansa tells him of the abuse she suffered by Ramsay’s hand?
  • We talk about Dany’s fiery destruction of the temple in Vaes Dothrak. Most of us loved it, but Corey Smith is that one guy in every group of friends who has to pick everything apart…and so he does. But we still love him.
  • And finally, we discuss “The Door,” and all those senseless deaths, all because Bran surfed the weirwood.net without adult supervision. Rest in Peace, Summer and Hodor. You are gone but never forgotten.
As usual, Take the Black leans heavily on the NSFW side (beware the F-bombs). And hey, since we’ve all seen Season 6, there aren’t any spoilers to worry about, so you Unsullied listeners can listen without fear.

GBBP 73: Reiner Knizia

This week, we get our game on with none other than Reiner Knizia. If you’re at all into tabletop board gaming beyond Scrabble and Monopoly, then you’ve likely heard his name if not played several of his award-winning titles. Knizia claims to have designed over 600 published games (taking into account regional variations and translations) – but no matter how that number is tallied, it’s still pretty darn impressive!
His most well-known games include Tigris & Euphrates, Modern Art, Ra, Taj Mahal, Through the Desert, Amun Re, Lord of the Rings, Samurai, Ingenious, and the seminal “gateaway game” Lost Cities. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds more… literally. And he’s recently branched out to the digital gaming sphere – not only presenting mobile versions of his classic board games but also introducing brand-new digital exclusive games.
In this episode, we chat about his games, the importance of awards (he was just nominated yet again for the children’s version of the Spiel des Jahres), the balance of theme vs mechanics, whether playing games is essential to human nature, and what he thinks epitomizes a Reiner Knizia game.

IQ2US: The President Has Usurped the Constitutional Power of Congress

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016
The Constitution provides that "All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States," and it goes on to grant Congress a robust-and fearsome-list of powers. James Madison assumed that "[i]n republican government, the legislative authority necessarily predominates," and he cautioned that the legislative department may tend to "draw[] all power into its impetuous vortex." But modern politics and law seem to tell a quite different story. With executive orders, administrative regulations, creative interpretations of federal statutes, and executive agreements with other nations, it may seem that the President, not Congress, is, in effect, wielding the most potent legislative power. Indeed, the Supreme Court is currently poised to decide whether President Obama's unilateral immigration actions usurped Congress's power and flouted his duty to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed." But some argue that this is nothing new: they say that the President is not exercising legislative power; he is simply exercising his well-established executive discretion. Is Congress still the most powerful branch, or is this the era of the imperial presidency? Has the President usurped Congress's legislative power?

IQ2US: Hunters Conserve Wildlife

Wednesday, May 4, 2016
Whether in America’s state game lands or the African bush, hunting has become one of the most hotly debated issues in the media and online. Internationally, the killing of Cecil the lion triggered a firestorm of criticism over trophy hunting rules and regulations. Central to the debate here in the U.S. is the white-tailed deer. Its overpopulation has caused millions of dollars in property damage, over browsing in forests, and the spread of Lyme disease. Many believe that regulated hunting can be an effective way to manage healthy populations of deer and other wildlife. And with the funds raised from legal hunting—the purchase of permits in Africa, licenses and taxes here in the U.S.—hunters have contributed significantly to conservation efforts on both public and private lands. But hunting’s critics question whether big game revenues really benefit local communities and whether hunting could ever be a humane way to maintain equilibrium and habitats. Is hunting wrong? Or are hunters conservationists?

IQ2US: Eliminate Corporate Subsidies

Wednesday, April 6, 2016
The auto industry, agriculture, the energy sector. What do they have in common? These industries benefit from government subsidies in the form of loans, tax breaks, regulation, and other preferences. Critics from the left and right say that not only do these subsidies transfer wealth from taxpayers to corporations, they distort the markets and our economy. Proponents say that government has an important role to play in launching innovation via strategic investment, and its support helps American companies thrive. Do we need subsidies, or is this corporate welfare?

IQ2US: Don't Trust the Promise of Artificial Intelligence

Wednesday, March 9, 2016
As technology rapidly progresses, some proponents of artificial intelligence believe that it will help solve complex social challenges and offer immortality via virtual humans. But AI’s critics say that we should proceed with caution. That its rewards may be overpromised, and that the pursuit of superintelligence and autonomous machines may result in unintended consequences. Is this the stuff of science fiction? Should we fear AI, or will these fears prevent the next technological revolution?

IQ2US: Free Speech Is Threatened on Campus

Tuesday, March 1, 2016
Protests have erupted on university campuses across the country. To many, these students are speaking out against racial injustice that has long been manifested in unwelcoming, sometimes hostile environments. But to critics, their demands have gone too far, creating an atmosphere of intolerance for opposing or unpopular points of view. [HD] FULL REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE | FOX NEWS | MARCH 03, 2016 - STAGE I

Published on Mar 3, 2016
The 11th Republican presidential debate of the 2016 race will feature candidates Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and John Kasich squaring off in Detroit tonight. The debate is being run by Fox News. NJ Advance Media will be bringing you live updates, beginning just before 9 p.m.

What to watch for? Here's a take from the Associated Press:

Ben Carson's departure from the GOP presidential race means the quartet of remaining Republicans on the debate stage Thursday night get more time for attacks as Donald Trump treads a path to the GOP nomination and his three rivals try to trip him up. Cheered on by many Republican leaders, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and John Kasich are racing the primary clock to March 15, likely their last chance to stop Trump in a series of winner-take-all contests.

At campaign events in the past week, Rubio made sometimes crude jokes about everything from Trump's tan to the size of his hands — he even suggested that the billionaire wet his pants at the last debate. Look for whether a newly confident Rubio, emboldened by his first primary win in Minnesota Tuesday, keeps it up or takes a more statesmanlike approach.

And what to expect from Trump? "I can't act overly presidential because I'm going to have people attacking from every side. A very good man, Ben Carson's not there anymore, so now we're going to have more time for the fighting," he said. "When people are hitting you from different angles, from all different angles, unfortunately you have to hit back. I would have a very, very presidential demeanor when I win, but until such time, you have to hit back," he told NBC on Thursday.

IQ2US: Lifespans Are Long Enough

Wednesday, February 3, 2016
What if we didn’t have to grow old and die? The average American can expect to live for 78.8 years, an improvement over the days before clean water and vaccines, when life expectancy was closer to 50, but still not long enough for most of us. So researchers around the world have been working on arresting the process of aging through biotechnology and finding cures to diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer. What are the ethical and social consequences of radically increasing lifespans? Should we accept a “natural” end, or should we find a cure to aging?

IQ2US: The U.S. Should Let In 100,000 Syrian Refugees

Wednesday, January 13, 2016
Since the Syrian Civil War began in 2011, more than 4 million Syrians have fled the country, creating the greatest refugee crisis since World War II. Most have fled to Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, but many have risked death to reach Europe and the possibility of a better life. Unlike Europe and Syria’s neighbors, the United States has had the advantage of picking and choosing from afar, taking in just over 2,000 Syrian refugees since the war’s start. The Obama administration has pledged to take another 10,000 in 2016, but there are some who suggest that we are falling well below the number that we can and should accept. What are our moral obligations, and what are the cultural, economic, and security issues that must be taken into account? Should the U.S. let in 100,000 Syrian refugees?
